Tell Me Why I Don’t Mind Mondays…

Almost 30 years ago, the Boomtown Rats released a song called Don’t Like Mondays… and while Bob Geldof is known these days as a humanitarian, I’m not sure what kind of social benefits this song gave to the world.

Yes, it was suitable for my years of teenage angst. All teens want songs to sing about how terrible life is, right? After all, apparently puberty is so incredibly difficult that we all think the world is about to end if we have a zit on our nose.

I think about that song every time I hear about another school shooting — the ultimate in teen angst gone wrong.

But I have also spent years singing it to myself nearly every Monday morning.

Holy crap! What a lot of negative anti-Monday programming I’ve filled my head with over 30 years! Most of the time I don’t even think about what I’m singing, I just sing “Tell me why I don’t like Mondays” like it’s an acceptable feeling to start out the week with.

“Tell me why I don’t like Mondays, I want to shoot the whole world down…”

Here’s the video if you don’t remember the song — or if you haven’t been plagued with it every Monday morning for years yourself (don’t listen if you’d rather not fall into the trap… it’s a pretty catchy song… or keep reading for my new angle on this):

Being Interviewed on Interviewing

Today I was interviewed about how to interview people by Jessalyn Coolbaugh, a copywriter friend of Ben Mack’s.

It was her first interview… and she actually did a darn good job of it, especially for someone who is a self-professed extremely shy introvert.

Hey, I’m an introvert too… and I always say that’s not a bad thing for interviewers, because the #1 skill an interviewer needs to have is listening. And introverts make the best listeners because they’re usually focused on other people instead of themselves.

But I was expecting someone beyond shy, based on how she described herself, and yet true to form for most introverts, you would never have known.

Besides the #1 interviewing skill, I shared some of my tricks with her. But the questioning focused a lot around how to get a guest rather than the types of questions to ask, so I never got into my schtick about open-ended neutral questions like I do in my book, Interviewing Unwrapped.

Bottom line in a nutshell? Stick to questions that start with the journalistic 5 W’s — Who, What, Where, When, Why… or the H, How.

A Hat Trick of Teleseminars

Today I did 3 teleseminars (a hat trick in hockey terminology, which seems appropriate because today apparently the NHL season started).

Earlier today it was Ben Mack, author of Think Two Products Ahead: Secrets the Big Advertising Agencies Don’t Want You to Know and How to Use Them for Bigger Profits.

The interview was for Rick Raddatz‘s Entrepreneur’s Vacation Club, and we uncovered a lot of content on sales, marketing, advertising, branding, Legend Platforms and more… but of course, in Ben’s unmistakable style where you never know what you’re going to get (which is half the fun).

Then it was real estate artist Frank McKinney for Masters of the Secret.

Frank’s the author of two bestsellers, Make It Big: 49 Secrets for Building a Life of Extreme Success, and Frank McKinney’s Maverick Approach to Real Estate Success: How You Can Go From A $50,000 Fixer-Upper To A $100 Million Mansion!

Barry and I asked him about his success principles, following your instinct, not giving in to fear when taking calculated risks, how to attract super-targetted high-end customers, how to discover and live your highest calling, and more.

Muscles and Magnetics… Testing and Healing the New Age Way

Earlier today Barry and I went to see a husband-and-wife healing team in the nearby town of Talent, Oregon… chiropractor and Kinesiologist Tom Clunie, and magnetic healer Jessica Bryan.

For years I have been following a restrictive diet to keep digestive issues under control. It’s called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (or SCD) and was created by the late Elaine Gottschall, author of Breaking The Vicious Cycle, who I had the pleasure to meet several times, since by coincidence she used to live near Toronto where I was.

But a few months ago, when I was going through my initial life changes and transitioning from a 14-year marriage to a new relationship, and first dealing with the initial stress of that situation, the digestive issues started flaring up.

When it became clear that the diet alone was no longer working as well as it had, I decided to start experimenting with some of the foods I had previously avoided: mainly sugar, starch, and some dairy (and that small list includes bread, cereal, grains, potatoes, corn, pasta, rice and so forth… which, of course, meant almost all processed or pre-packaged food, all “junk food”, and more).

I have nothing against avoiding processed and packaged foods, which usually have far too many preservatives and additives to be good for us… but I wanted a little more flexibility if I still had to deal with the pain.

After all, if I’m living a Life Without Limits… why would I want so many restrictions?

Busting Loose From Human Restraints

Robert ScheinfeldThis morning (early morning… gawd, I hate 8 a.m. interviews!) Barry and I interviewed Robert Scheinfeld, author of Busting Loose From the Money Game: Mind-Blowing Strategies For Changing the Rules of a Game You Can’t Win.

Or… the even more mind-blowing Busting Loose From the Money Game Home Transformational System.

The interview was to add to our Manifest More Wealth package, because when he was in the group call he didn’t really have time to dive into his concepts very deeply.

I made Barry promise not to book any more interviews before 10 a.m… I like to be as wide awake as possible to catch the nuances of the conversation and follow up accordingly.

One of my interviewing secrets is to always listen, always take notes (unless I’m on camera) and work on being in the moment.

Come to think of it, not a bad philosophy for life in general too.

Getting A Move On… And A Movie On

Well, last night I went to the first movie I’ve been to in years.

Oh, I’ve seen movies. I’ve watched them on TV or on video or DVD… just not in actual theater.

But Barry and I took the plunge, and went to the first movie that looked somewhat interesting to come out since we’ve been together… The Heartbreak Kid, starring Ben Stiller.

I’m sure you’ve seen the trailer on TV, but if not… here it is:

Strangely enough, the movie happened to have reflections of my life — and Barry’s life — all the way through it.

Just like our relationships mirror certain aspects of our own personalities, I’ve noticed more and more lately how what we take in from the media can reflect certain aspects of our lives.

In quantum physics terms, what we notice and observe is actually being created, so to speak, just for us. So I guess it makes sense that it should have a personal message for us.

Holy Crap, Batman… It’s Outrageous!

Yesterday our customer service manager told me about a response to one of my emails that had come through the support desk. She had deleted it right away, but she giggled as she told me that someone had taken offense at my use of “Holy crap” in the subject line of a broadcast I sent to my list.

Well, holy crap! I wish I had seen the response, because it’s the second time it happened, and I wanted to see if it was the same guy.

But her reasoning for deleting it was that I had been called “ungodly” or some such thing for using the term, and she didn’t want me to see that. But then she found it so funny, she had to tell me after all.

Here’s the email I sent out Oct 3 that got the subscriber angry:

Subject: Holy crap, Peter… get the truth, the whole truth, at no cost!

Investigating Introverts

Okay, here’s one of those weird “coincidental” things that just make you scratch your head in wonder… unless you understand the law of attraction, and the fact that certain things you need or want to experience are being filtered to you according to your focus.

Barry and I have been talking lately about introverts and extroverts. He’s an extrovert, and loves communicating with people. But I’m an introvert, and my communication style is different. So sometimes when I’m quiet or lost in thought, just enjoying the moment, he thinks something is wrong — otherwise, why wouldn’t I be telling him what I’m thinking?

So I’ve been trying harder and harder to let him know what’s on my mind — and when it’s on my mind, not a couple of hours later after it’s rattled around in my brain for awhile, which is something I tend to do that drives him nuts.

But then wouldn’t you know it… right in the midst of me trying to explain to him that I’m not broken, just an introvert, Ben Mack sent out an email to his list on the weekend about introverts (apparently he’s one, too).

Kid Nation Segregation… Or Canamerico Conglomeration?

Barry and I were watching Kid Nation tonight — the reality show where kids up to 15 years old are working together to build an old-time town called Bonanza City, but also competing in teams. There’s no elimination on this one though… in fact, they’re all encouraged to stay till the end, but some can’t take the heat and leave (usually because they miss their families).

Here’s a party scene montage from another episode:

YouTube Preview Image

The over-riding topic of tonight’s show seemed to be religion — and the kids were encouraged to hold some kind of religious service, with the big decision being whether to have a cross-denomination gathering or split everyone up into groups based on their beliefs.

Interestingly, many of the youngsters quoted facts about how religion is the root cause of many wars; for a moment they seemed rather clever and well-educated.

Then they started using that as an excuse as to why they should NOT mix based on religion. One girl said, “how can you expect people with different beliefs to be in the same room together?”

Umm… hello, are we not in rooms with people of different beliefs all the time? You probably work and/or live and/or play with people who have not only different religious beliefs, but different moral beliefs, different beliefs about sex and relationships, different beliefs on what’s fun, different beliefs on what success is, different beliefs on the most important things in life… different beliefs on EVERYTHING!

Should we all segregate ourselves then, in case we inadvertently start wars based on our beliefs?

Examining Our Lives

Jason OmanI just posted an article on the LWL Worldwide blog about Jason Oman, and about our own mortality — or immortality.

Jason and I hung out with the other speakers in Atlanta a few months ago, when we both were presenters at Ken McArthur‘s “Get Your Product Done” event.

Last night Ken sent out an email to let people know that Jason had suffered a brain aneurysm, and was unconscious in hospital, waiting for surgery.

This morning I checked with Larry Benet, who also hung out with us that weekend (along with Harris Fellman, Simon Leung, Ben Mack and more…) and Larry said that Jason was heading into surgery later today.

He’s a young guy, and he’s accomplished a lot so far, with potential to accomplish a lot more… so hearing the news made me start asking myself a bunch of questions about life.

Read my post “Facing Our Own Mortality… Or Immortality” here.

And then please keep Jason in your hearts and minds.

Keep Unwrapping the Mysteries of Life,

Heather Vale
