Sometimes Hard Now Means Better Later

Earlier today, I got a massage from a deep tissue massage therapist named Sherri Morris.

I’ve had other massages — some more spiritual, some less spiritual, but all physically less intense than this one.

I’ve actually been wanting a deeper massage for a long time… but only the ones I get from Barry really make me feel like I’ve had a massage when it’s all said and done.

Today it almost hurt TOO much at times when she was really digging into the sore spots… but I stuck it out, thinking, “No pain, no gain”.

That doesn’t mean life is always about “No pain, no gain” — we don’t ALWAYS have to endure pain in order to get ahead — but sometimes a “good hurt” helps us move forward.

It’s kind of like personal development.  You can read the nice feel-goody books, and walk away feeling pleasant, the way I often do after nice light massages that feel good while they’re being done, but don’t have a lasting physical effect.

Or you can read hard-hitting books that sting a little when you read them, but help you break through your personal blocks in major ways, kind of like the deep-tissue massage.

One of my favorites is Randy Gage’s “Why You’re Dumb, Sick & Broke… And How to Get Smart, Healthy & Rich“.  Randy is one of the secret masters at Masters of the Secret, and his teachings don’t pull any punches — and are very effective.

Because sometimes we have to hurt (either a little or a lot) in order to learn, accept, move forward and conquer the world.

Physics vs. Metaphysics in Health

Sometimes it’s hard to tell which to place bets on… real-world physics, or other-world metaphysics.

For instance, yesterday was “Doctor Day” for me. First I went to get my eyes checked again at the LASIK center in Medford (they’re healing, but one eye still has a ways to go… so I see great out of my left, while the right is fuzzier than ever).

They recommended physical solutions — like continuing to use eye drops to keep my eyes moist and help them heal — although on the side I’ve been using metaphysical solutions, like meditation and visualization, to give that healing a boost.

Would I use just one or the other?

Just rely on physical means of treatment… or just metaphysical?

I Can See Clearly Now… Almost!

Today I went to get my eyes checked to see if I qualify for LASIK surgery.

I’m tired of contact lenses that get dust stuck on them, and that get dry and pinch my eyes when I least expect it — causing my eyes to hurt and water like crazy at the most inopportune moments.

And I’m tired of glasses that leave marks on my nose and tug behind my ears.  I got the very lightest pair I could find a year ago, and they still slide down my ski-slope nose.

Not to mention they get all smudged every time Barry hugs me… which means I’m constantly cleaning them off.

So now… yes, I’m a candidate for LASIK, and yes, I’m going to get my eyes fixed… in just over a week.

I can’t wait… because I deserve new eyes.

If we don’t believe we deserve things — a better life, a better job, a better career, a better life partner, better relationships — then we’ll never get there.

But I believe… and I’m doing it!

Yes, there’s some fear — there always is in change.

But if you face your fears, and take the leap anyhow, most of the time you’ll find yourself flying.

How to Stay Well All Winter

I found an interesting article in Redbook, written by Nicole Yorio, called “Cold and flu? Not you!” that seemed appropriate for this time of year.

I’m just going to paraphrase what she wrote… but some darned good advice here!

1. Get a Massage

Apparently massage lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which destroys immune cells… nice, another reason to love treating myself to massages!

(Besides the fact that it’s a great way to feel pampered, special, worthy of luxury and incredibly grateful — all powerful manifesting emotions.)

How much massage do you need?

Tuning Up The Body And Spirit

appleBarry and I just finished a three-day detox program where we only ate fruit and drank carrot juice.

I expected to be able to pull it off with no problem — after all, I eat a lot of fruit and healthy foods every day anyhow — but I thought Barry, being a big guy who loves his protein, would have problems.

The most important thing we did at the start of it was commit to ourselves, and to each other, that we were in it together and planned to finish the full three days without cheating.

And even though there were ups and downs… we did just that…

Put Me In Coach, I’m Ready To Play

Zen DeBruckeYesterday I had a phone coaching session with our friend and colleague, Zen DeBrucke.

Barry and I have talked about coaching a lot on our live calls… because sometimes you’re just too close to a situation to be able to stand back and see the big picture.

Books and audios are great, and so is meditation… but an experienced coach can help you see clearly what’s going on in your life, and that clarity is sometimes all you need to move forward.

I have shown one of Zen’s videos on the Internal Guidance System elsewhere on this blog, which you can see here

And here she is being interviewed on the topic:

But one-on-one, although she prompted me to listen to my IGS as she talked (to know if her assessments were on or not), we went in a whole different (and personal) direction…

Blessed Are the Blissful… Bring on the Spa

Yesterday I had my first facial at a spa. Yes, I went to a spa in Las Vegas, and got a massage… but I’ve never had a professional treatment put on my face.

It was part of the birthday present that Barry got me… a gift certificate to the new Spa at Club Northwest, the gym that we go to. And the certificate is good for several treatments. Guys, if you want a gift that will make your woman think very highly of you, a gift certificate to a spa is a great choice!

Spa = The epitome of blissfulness.

Gift Certificate = She will think of you while she’s being pampered… and her thoughts will be around gratitude, appreciation and love (and she gets to choose her own treatments — even better!)

This spa had a different vibe than in Vegas. Everything in Vegas seems very mechanical, with a certain money-focused get-em-in and get-em-out machinery in place. The one in Grants Pass is more spiritual in feel, which generates more of a relaxing feeling… and that’s really the point, right?

To start off with, they offered a selection of drinks, including some local Southern Oregon wines. I chose a Cabernet Sauvignon, which to me helped me get into the mindset of being pampered, which in turn kicked the gratitude into place. After all, how often do you enjoy and savor a nice glass of wine in the middle of the afternoon? (Not something I advocate on a regular basis, but for a special occasion — or to make yourself feel deserving while you “act as if” — it can be highly effective.)

And then, the real pampering began…

The Joys of Being Coffee

Writing about carrot juice yesterday reminded me of an email that was circulating the web a year or two ago. I happened to keep it, and posted it in my old Success Unwrapped membership area, so I found it again to share here:

ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil.

In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see.”

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.

The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, mother?”

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity — boiling water. Each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” she asked her daughter.

“When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity?

Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.

Live your life so at the end, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

You might want to send this message to those people who mean something to you; to those who have touched your life in one way or another; to those who make you smile when you really need it; to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down; to those whose friendship you appreciate; to those who are so meaningful in your life.

May we all be COFFEE!!

The power to change the world we live in — to change our environments, in essence — truly lies within ourselves.

What’s the best way to “be” coffee?

Where Are You Looking?

Barry just shared this Native American parable with me, and I absolutely love it:

The Creator gathers all the animals and says, “I want to hide something from humans until they are ready for it — the realization that they create their own reality.”

“Give it to me. I’ll fly it to the Moon,” says the Eagle.

“No, one day soon they will go there and find it.”

“How about the bottom of the ocean?” ask the salmon.

“No, they will find it there too.”

“I will bury it in the great plains,” says the Buffalo.

“They will soon dig and find it there.”

“Put it inside them,” says the wise grandmother mole.

“Done,” says the Creator. “It is the last place they will look.”

Okay, so now that you know where to look… I’d like to share a great way to find it.

Rolling Your Way To Better Health

This morning I finally got a shipment I’ve been waiting for… some of my stuff has been at my parents’ house the past two months, but they finally got a chance to send it to me, and my foam roller arrived today.

I’m so excited, because now we have two… and up until now, Barry and I have been playing tug-of-war with the one we have.

Mine came as part of the Better Posture Guaranteed system from Jason Henderson; Barry ordered his from a fitness store online. But they’re both exactly the same.

And, in awe-inspiring synchronistic fashion, Jason sent mine to me in Toronto the same day Barry happened to order his. Neither of us knew the other was getting one, but we both love them.

The cool thing about mine is it came with two Better Posture Guaranteed DVDs hosted by Jason’s partner, Rob Smith. Because honestly, when you just look at these foam rollers, you think, “What the heck is this thing for?”

Here’s a video Jason took of me at JVAlert Live in June, where I’m demonstrating one of the moves:

And I said it was “awesome” in the video because that was truly my reaction when I tried it the first time, and Jason asked me to repeat it. I did because… well, it is awesome, and I’ll say it again: “It’s awesome!”

So, why do I like it so much?
