We felt like we were going to keep racing further down\u2026 and instead we took a sharp turn upwards.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s inevitable that we experience ups and downs in life \u2014 after all, as we\u2019re always saying, the Universe exists in complete balance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, knowing that doesn\u2019t really make the downs much easier to deal with, does it? But tapping in to your superhuman drive, which takes charge when you\u2019re determined to get out of a dark ditch and shed some light on a situation, can.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funny thing is, you can\u2019t usually get out of that ditch by scrambling<\/strong>. It\u2019s more effective to quiet those panicky emotions, take a step back, and look at the big picture \u2014 even as far as seeing your life\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s essentially what Barry and I ended up doing, which led to the first amazingly inspiring breakthrough&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Now our son, Konan \u2014 who recently got over a week-long illness that had the already-picky toddler eating next to nothing \u2014 suddenly loves food more than he has since, as a baby, he would gobble down anything I put on a spoon.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest surprise came yesterday morning, when he pointed out a plum on the counter. See, Barry\u2019s been concerned about Konan\u2019s aversion to fruit \u2014 he\u2019ll eat bananas, fruit yogurt or smoothies, but turns away any other incarnation of nature\u2019s sweets \u2014 even while I\u2019ve been insisting that it\u2019s pretty normal for a toddler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But this was a chance for another breakthrough<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Konan-21mos-plum01-sm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1253\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: left;\" title=\"Konan 21 mos with plum\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Konan-21mos-plum01-sm1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Konan-21mos-plum01-sm1.jpg 326w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Konan-21mos-plum01-sm1-300x280.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><\/a>Holding Konan in one arm, I showed him how we wash fruit with the other, then took a bite of it.<\/p>\n<p>Intrigued, though a little cautious, Konan followed suit\u2026 first a small taste, then gradually bigger bites, until he was munching happily away on it (I took a few pictures as proof, because I knew Barry would never believe it).<\/p>\n<p>Konan isn\u2019t motivated much by reward. At his age, just a few months shy of turning two, he doesn\u2019t understand the concept of, \u201cif you do this, we\u2019ll give you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he is motivated by doing what his parents do. Leading by example doesn\u2019t always work when it comes to food, but when his curiosity mixes with his prime purpose of being a big boy, magic happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Along the lines of these two examples<\/strong>, Barry dug up a fascinating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/interesting-video-on-people-rewards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10-minute video<\/a> that shows how people are motivated. I can\u2019t do it justice here, except to say that it involves purpose.
