This step represents your little bird growing up and leaving the nest, and that can bring mixed feelings of pride, joy, sadness and fear from both of you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Of course, not everybody needs to go to college. There are tons of success stories out there of people who have accomplished great things without it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But some kids learn a lot from the experience \u2014 maybe even more than they learn from their classes.<\/p>\n<p>If she\u2019s moving out for the first time, it may seem like there\u2019s so much to do, and not enough time to accomplish it. To make matters worse, it\u2019s easy to become confused about what, and how much, should be brought to the new residence.<\/p>\n<p>Being prepared can make the transition easier, so to help you out I\u2019ve prepared my checklist of <strong>Top 10 <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dormessentials.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dorm Essentials<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1<\/span>. Clothes<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>The need for clothing is obvious, but don\u2019t let your child pack her whole wardrobe. If she\u2019ll only have six drawers and three feet of closet space, she\u2019ll need to be selective. Several pairs of shoes will be required \u2014 casual, athletic and dress varieties \u2014 and season-appropriate staples like jeans, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters and one or two jackets, depending on where the school is. She can always trade out winter clothes for spring fashions when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sheets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1266\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: left;\" title=\"sheets\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sheets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sheets.jpg 215w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sheets-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>2<\/span>. Bedding<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>Two sets of coordinated sheets, pillow cases, and comforter covers for one comforter should be enough, so your child can mix and match. This way he\u2019ll always have one clean set of sheets while the other is in the laundry, as long as he doesn\u2019t wait weeks between washings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/laptop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1264\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"laptop\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/laptop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/laptop.jpg 400w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/laptop-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/laptop-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/a>3<\/span>. Computer and Accessories<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>She\u2019ll need a laptop computer and the appropriate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laptopstand.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laptop accessories<\/a>, including a surge protecting power strip, Ethernet cord, USB mouse, headphones with a built-in microphone for communication and note recording, memory stick, and a laptop stand to make working easier. If the laptop has a built-in DVD player, she might not even need access to a TV.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/backpack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1265\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"backpack\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/backpack-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/backpack-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/backpack-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/backpack.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>4<\/span>. Bag<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>A good backpack or messenger bag can serve double duty as a book bag and laptop case, depending on what your child needs to carry that day. If art supplies also need to be carted around, a second bag will help keep the mess contained.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">5<\/span>. Desk Accessories<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>Old-school desk supplies are still required too, like pens, markers, pencils, pencil sharpener, pencil holders, ruler, stapler, scissors, envelopes in various sizes, stamps, a set of stackable desk trays, and a calculator.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">6<\/span>. Storage and Organizers<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>Make use of limited space by sending some under-the-bed storage boxes, over-the-door hooks, stackable plastic bins, and a hanging laundry hamper.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/camera4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1278\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; float: right;\" title=\"camera\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/camera4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/camera4.jpg 398w, https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/camera4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/><\/a>7<\/span>. Toaster Oven or Microwave<\/strong>:<strong> <\/strong>Nearly any meal can be prepared these days using either a toaster oven or microwave, or both, and they fit well in a dorm room.
