{"id":160,"date":"2008-06-17T19:14:18","date_gmt":"2008-06-18T02:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/?p=160"},"modified":"2023-04-17T16:12:59","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T00:12:59","slug":"the-beach-and-the-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/17\/the-beach-and-the-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beach and the Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=https:\/\/heathervale.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/17\/the-beach-and-the-forest\/&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=1&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;font=\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:25px\"><\/iframe><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fheathervale.com%2Fblog%2F2008%2F06%2F17%2Fthe-beach-and-the-forest%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><p>This weekend, Barry and I met my parents for a little adventure &#8212; the Northern California coastline, the Southern Oregon coastline, and the Redwood forests.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that one little pocket of the world contains sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, and awe-inspiring trees, all within a few miles of each other.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/images\/MomBarryDad-CaliBeach-jun08-small.jpg\" alt=\"Mom, Barry and Dad in Cali\" width=\"419\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Barry with my parents by the California beach&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And Dad&#8217;s taking my picture as I take theirs!<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d never know it was North instead of South&#8230; this is the type of beautiful beach that you could find and enjoy in nearly any warm climate area in the world.<\/p>\n<p>If you blindfolded someone and brought them here, they&#8217;d probably never guess where they were!<\/p>\n<p>Then we moved further North up the coastline, where it turns rockier (and windier! Wow!) but just as beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/images\/Heather-OregonCoast-Jun08-small.jpg\" alt=\"Heather - Oregon coast\" width=\"308\" height=\"231\" \/>This is me above the point where the sand and rocks meet&#8230; like teeny rocks that have been formed from what the big rocks once were.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of years of history can be seen in a place like this &#8212; and it&#8217;s amazing that we get to experience it.<\/p>\n<p>I like to imagine it 100 years ago.  Did it look the same?<\/p>\n<p>What about 1,000 years ago?<\/p>\n<p>How many people have stood, just like me, above the beach with the wind whipping all around them?<\/p>\n<p>Things like that make me stop and contemplate the world we live in, and the way it has unfolded over time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It also makes me enjoy the moment, even as I think fleetingly about other moments that have also been enjoyed in that very same spot.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/images\/JedediahForest-Jun08-02-small.jpg\" alt=\"walking in Jedediah forest\" width=\"231\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After that we headed back south and went through the Redwood forests, on a small trail off the beaten path (literally &#8212; it&#8217;s just a dirt road), stopping every now and then to take a short hike into the huge trees.<\/p>\n<p>This picture gives you some idea of the size of the giant Redwoods, as Barry walked behind the rest of us&#8230; but for some reason, none of the pictures we took really did them justice.<\/p>\n<p>The awe-factor somehow seemed to go missing as soon as the 3-D world was captured on a 2-D photo.<\/p>\n<p>This really makes me think about our significance (or rather, insignificance) in the vastness of the Universe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It makes me appreciate everything we&#8217;ve created, everything we co-exist with, and everything that defines what we call home.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And of course, it makes me appreciate those I love that were there to experience it with me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep Unwrapping the Mysteries of Life!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Heather Vale\" src=\"http:\/\/heathervale.com\/images\/heather_sig.jpg\" alt=\"Heather Vale\" width=\"185\" height=\"31\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend, Barry and I met my parents for a little adventure &#8212; the Northern California coastline, the Southern Oregon coastline, and the Redwood forests.
