Sometimes it’s hard to tell which to place bets on… real-world physics, or other-world metaphysics.
For instance, yesterday was “Doctor Day” for me. First I went to get my eyes checked again at the LASIK center in Medford (they’re healing, but one eye still has a ways to go… so I see great out of my left, while the right is fuzzier than ever).
They recommended physical solutions — like continuing to use eye drops to keep my eyes moist and help them heal — although on the side I’ve been using metaphysical solutions, like meditation and visualization, to give that healing a boost.
Would I use just one or the other?
Just rely on physical means of treatment… or just metaphysical?
No, not a chance… I like the combination of both. We know by now how powerful the mind can be at healing the body. But that doesn’t mean the mind alone is the best medicine.
Later in the afternoon yesterday, I went to see my naturopathic doctor. Yes, she’s got some metaphysical tendencies, but her treatments are very physical nonetheless.
She gave me a Homeopathic remedy to help my eyes heal faster… Arnica Montana, which she says is very good at helping the body to heal after any surgery. So that’s physical, even though it’s on the natural side of physical.
She also gave me my results from a food allergy blood test that I took a couple of weeks ago… and here’s where it gets really interesting.
Several months back, I did Kinesiology with a local chiropractor to determine what foods I should avoid (after years of being on a very restrictive diet to overcome some digestive issues). The Kinesiology test spotlighted sugar and cow’s milk as the only troublesome foods for me.
More on my experiences, and what Kinesiology is, in this blog post.
Chiropractors are “physical” doctors, but I’d say Kinesiology is definitely a “metaphysical” process. My naturopathic doctor suggested the “physical” blood test as being more accurate, since it’s dealing with our actual antibodies rather than strength or weakness of our muscle reactions.
Here’s the disclaimer… I believe that IF circumstances are ideal, and IF we can do muscle-testing in a controlled environment — and controlled means emotions, mind, body and spirit all working together in unprejudiced ways — that Kinesiology could be as accurate as a blood test.
But I also believe it’s very difficult to get those ideal conditions.
What my blood test says is that I really should stay away from eggs (which tested fine in the Kinesiology test) as well as sunflower seeds and pineapple… all of which I have eaten freely forever, even during my restrictive diet phase, since those foods were all considered healthy for people with digestive issues.
The diet I followed was the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), which eliminates all foods that are known to cause digestive problems, whether or not you specifically have problems with that food. It worked wonders for a few years, and as long as I didn’t have to eat out at restaurants (or could rely just on salads when I did), and as long as I was okay with staying on the diet until I healed (which was taking longer than it’s supposed to), everything was fine. But it’s very restrictive.
However, within those restrictions, eggs were one of the few things that could be eaten as often as desired without consequence, and nuts and fruits were close behind.
Now I discover that my body doesn’t like those foods. Quite the shift in food thinking.
My blood test also revealed that I should be careful with cow’s milk, gluten, almonds, and a few other things… milk and gluten were also off-limits on the SCD, but the gluten tested fine with Kinesiology… as did the almonds, which were actually a staple on SCD.
So the bottom line is, I’ve been metaphorically barking up the wrong tree with some of my food avoidances over the past 10 years or so, if I want to place my bets with physics… and at this point I do.
Chalk one up for physics.
However, fast forward to this evening… after we had dinner out, my stomach was bothering me, so I tried my favorite usual natural remedies (didn’t go so far as to take medication, but I drank fennel tea and apple cider vinegar, which usually fix the problem) and then laid down when those treatments didn’t work… all in the physical realm of health treatment, and all failed.
Then Barry came in and played one of my audio meditations on my iPod for me. He could have chosen a guided meditation from Super Manifestor, or a brainwave entrainment from Harmonic Ascension, but instead he chose a hypnosis from Real Mind Power Secrets.
It wasn’t even a health hypnosis — the one he put on was a financial abundance hypnosis — but within minutes I started to feel better. All it took was the initial relaxation sequence, and the pain and discomfort were gone.
Chalk one up for metaphysics.
So the bottom line is, for me, a combination of physics and metaphysics works best when it comes to health… but until we can get to the point where we can totally quiet our mind chatter, and completely focus the powers of our minds to actually make full use of what they’re capable of without thoughts and emotions getting in the way, then I’m not going to rely on metaphysics 100%.
We’re spiritual beings having a human experience — or metaphysical beings having a physical experience — but while we’re here, we have to honor the real-world laws of physics and other sciences.
