Safe Metal Mouth?!

Okay, look… I like Parents magazine. And Parenting, and BabyTalk… they’re some of my favorite reading materials for getting tips, ideas and advice on raising Konan.

But sometimes I’m just amazed at what makes it into the magazines under the guise of balanced journalism. The fact that they really toe the “company line” (i.e. promote what the establishment tells them to) becomes really evident at times.

Last month, it was an article called “Chiropractors for Kids?” which seemed like it was going to be a fair examination until the author started slamming chiropractic as possible quackery, mainly based on the fact that a lot of chiropractors (and other holistic health practitioners) don’t believe that giving kids a ton of vaccinations during their first few years of life — more than ever in the history of the world — is safe.

Yes, I accept the fact that these mainstream magazines are going to be pro-vaccination, for the same reason that Konan’s pediatrician HAS TO ask about shots every time we go in for a visit. They’re strongly regulated in these areas, and we have to take it all with a grain of salt.

But I can’t believe the blurb I just read in this month’s issue:

Dental News Flash: It’s safe for kids ages 6 and up to get metal fillings when they have cavities, finds a review of more than 200 studies by the FDA. Known as dental amalgam, the metal mixture contains a small amount of mercury, but research shows that the amount of mercury vapor that’s released during the filling process isn’t high enough to be harmful.”

WHAT??? One of the most toxic substances in the world is OKAY to put in my child’s mouth? I DON’T THINK SO!

It goes on to say that the study couldn’t confirm safety for children under 6 years old.

So first they tell us that it’s okay to inject our kids with toxins and chemicals through the form of vaccines, and now it’s okay to put it in their mouths… because only a LITTLE BIT is going to leach out and get swallowed?

I yi yi… that’s just nuts. Hopefully Konan won’t get cavities (when he ever gets around to growing teeth, that is) but if he does, he’ll be getting non-metal composite fillings.

If you’re a pro-vaccination parent who’s getting riled up over what I just wrote, consider this from Diana Fatayerji, M.S., Ph.D., in Inspired Parenting Magazine‘s Spring 2004 issue: “Adverse reactions are believed to be a result of contaminants contained in the vaccines, including viruses, bacterial toxins and chemicals used in the preparation or preserving of the vaccine.”

I just wrote an article on Vaccine Side Effects in Infants for LiveStrong.com which goes into this topic deeper. It’s a balanced and heavily-researched piece, and though the focus is infants, the same is true for all kids… and there may be some evidence there that you hadn’t considered before.

  1. Thanks Heather for the courage to state what is the possible other side of the coin. When I had my first child, I thought it would be so easy to follow the usual protocol set up by our parents regarding child rearing. Go the the doctor, get shots to protect them…….until I got to the point where it was time to vaccinate my son. I came across an article in of all places, Money magazine. I thought it odd for a medical article to be in a financial mag so I read it. I am so very glad that I did. I have gone against mainstream medical advice so often only to find that my mothering instincts for my children’s situations were more advantageous for my children than ‘their’ doctrin. I am not against the medical profession per se, rather the rather strange bedfellows they pair up with like big pharma. There is enough information out there, for anyone who wants to look, to feel that the best interest of our children is not what the makers of the vaccines have in mind. As far as chiropractic, my entire family has benefited from the services of several good ones. There…my humble opinion…based on my life experience. Thanks Heather. I’m glad to know you and Barry are in this world.

  2. Again Heather, good for you to bring this up. I had read that amalgam has 40% mercury?
In my own experience, a saliva test showed that the mercury from amalgam over the years had leached into my body and stored in my joints. I had not told the practitioner of any symptoms, just took the test and went back in a couple of weeks. Each joint the test pointed to had pain in that spot.
Once when a student of healing checked all my joints for mercury she activated the deposits and as I felt the buzzing I and sank into a sea of suicide thoughts which lasted too long. When ever I became consistently hot, ie summer I would go into a deep desire to suicide. Heat due to stress, weather etc activates it and also causes weaknesses. Check the NOVA magazine for an article on the new mercury globes.
There is enough history to show the dangers if only through the early 19th century hatters dropping like flys when they inhaled the mercury during the hat making process. There are books and books on this subject. Just one more coverup.

  3. I think that you both do a great job of stating the facts and offering a different perspective. So many people still rely on and believe whatever they read and hear in the media. It’s time more people realized that getting the public to take more drugs, and vaccines puts more money into the pockets of the companies that develop and produce them. I’m a grandmother and my kids never got pumped with vaccine for measles and every other childhood ailment. They got the measles and they got over it without any ill effects just like we did when we were kids. We only have to look and see all the cases of autism and other problems that seem to be in epidemic proportions these days. Something has changed! We need to stop kidding ourselves by thinking that these drugs are all for our benfit. In general they don’t care about us the public or the long term affects these drugs will have on people. When it comes down to it, it’s $$$$$ that count. I hope more people will take responsibility for their own health and do their homework to research and check their options before saying yes to everything that comes out on the market. Of course we need the medical system, hospitals, doctors and even some drugs when there is no other option but things are way out of control. There’s a drug for everything you can think of even sweat and think how many drugs are recalled after being on the market for a few months or so because of the side effects.

  4. The vaccines are now coming into question but I do know about the metal amalgams that they are try to push off on our kids. One of the factors that they use is that the mercury containing amalgams are a lot cheaper than the non-metal composites. If your child does have a cavity and you use the mercury filling, it’s in the kid’s mouth forever. The extra expense is worth my children’s health.
